LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 25 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team lost a tight 5-4 match to No. 20 Williams before earning a 9-0 sweep of No. 27 Connecticut College Saturday at the Bates College Squash Center.

Senior captain Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) led the way for Bates (3-4) on Saturday, winning both his matches in dominant fashion at the No. 1 position. Senior Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.), sophomore Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) and first-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) all won a pair of matches as well, with Hashmi winning his third match in the last two days.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday when they host Tufts at 5pm.

With the score tied at four, Udai Pal won 3-1 (12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 14-12) at the No. 3 position to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Ephs (5-3) over the Bobcats Saturday morning.

Bates made it very interesting down the stretch. Hashmi improved his personal record to 5-1 on the season with an epic 3-2 (7-11, 7-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-9) come-from-behind victory over Charles Merrill at the No. 9 position, tying the overall match at four.

Bonnell had no issues at the top of the lineup, earning a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-9) win over Jacob Bassil. But the bottom of the lineup is where Bates really showed its strength. In addition to Hashmi's win at No. 9, McComish and Koenigsbauer recorded victories at the No. 7 and 8 positions respectively. McComish swept Claude Smith (11-5, 11-9, 11-7) and Koenigsbauer rolled to a 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-3) win over David Pincus.

But the Ephs swept three of the five matches they won, with the other two victories coming in four games, including Pal's clincher.

Bonnell won again at the No. 1 position, defeating Connecticut College's Andre Giglio 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-3), and every Bates player impressed after hard-fought matches earlier in the day. Sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) earned his second win of the weekend, with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 16-14) victory over MD Jawad at the No. 2 position. And junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) won his second match in three tries since returning from studying abroad during the fall semester in Italy. Attia swept Tyler Maguire 3-0 (11-5, 14-12, 11-6) at the No. 3 position.

Seniors Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) and Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up their first wins of 2020 with victories at No. 4 and 5 respectively. Yousry rolled to a 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 13-11) win over James Andrew and Rothenberg defeated Billy Fleurima 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-4).

First-year Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) had no issues at the No. 6 position in a 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-4) win over Samuel Piller.

McComish, Koenigsbauer and Hashmi all prevailed yet again at the bottom of the lineup, with McComish winning his first two games before his opponent retired.
