No. 25 men's squash splits of a pair of matches against NESCAC foes in Connecticut

The No. 25 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 28 Wesleyan 8-1 Saturday morning before falling 9-0 at No. 2 Trinity in the afternoon. Bates (2-2) returns to action next month when the Bobcats welcome No. 17 MIT to town on Friday, Jan. 10 at 6pm.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bobcats swept five matches on their way to an 8-1 win at Wesleyan (1-3) Saturday morning. 

Senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned his third victory of the young season with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-4) victory over William Bienstock at the No. 4 position. First-year Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) and senior Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) earned sweeps as well, with Walker taking down Alex Dreyfus 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-1) at the No. 5 position and McCommish winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-6) at the No. 6 position over Andrew Doucette. 

First-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) picked up his third sweep of the year with a 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-6) win over Vabuk Pahar at the No. 8 position and sophomore Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) showed off the Bobcats' depth with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-3) win at the No. 9 position over Brinton Thomas. 

Sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) earned a 3-1 (11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6) win at the No. 2 position over John Sutherby and senior Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) won his 2019-20 debut with a hard-fought 3-2 (7-11, 11-3, 11-3, 10-12, 11-9) victory over Shanay Sanghavi at the No. 3 position.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 2 nationally ranked Bantams (5-0) swept eight matches in a 9-0 victory over the Bobcats Saturday afternoon. 

Hashmi won the only game of the match for Bates, defeating Martin Rios in their second game before Rios took the match 3-1 (11-3, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8) over the Bates first-year.

The Bobcats went with the same lineup against the Bantams as they did against the Cardinals earlier in the day. Bates will be at full strength come January with the expected returns of All-NESCAC selection junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) and fellow junior Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) to the lineup.
