BREWSTER, Mass. -- Junior Preston Haugh fired a second-day score of 80 to finish in a tie with senior captain Andrew Garcia-Bou for the team lead as the Bates men's golf team finished 13th out of 22 teams in the 85th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship played Sunday-Monday at The Captains Course.
The Bobcats shot 659 as a team over the course of two days, finishing just three strokes back of 12th-place Tufts University and 12 strokes ahead of 14th-place University of New England.
Haugh (Alexandria, Va.) and Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) finished tied for 51st out of 114 individuals, each finishing with a two-day score of 165.
Senior captain Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) and senior James Stevens (North Kingstown, R.I.) both finished just one stroke back of Haugh and Garcia-Bou with a two-day score of 166. Lewin shot an 81 on Sunday while Stevens finished the tournament strong with an 82 on Monday. Sophomore Jack Howard (Pelham, N.Y.) finished a stroke back of Lewin and Stevens.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes member colleges and universities in New England and New York and is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament.
The Bates men's golf season continues in April when Lewin competes for a conference title in the NESCAC Men's Golf Championship.
