BREWSTER, Mass. -- The Bates women's golf team defeated Husson University by two strokes to capture the fourth annual Women's New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship played Sunday-Monday at The Captains Course.
The Bobcats and Eagles entered play on Monday tied for first out of four teams. Junior Ellie Murphy (Schwenksville, Pa.) shot a 93 on Monday to help propel Bates to victory. Murphy and junior captain Brittany Seipp (Glen Head, N.Y.) both shot 188 over the course of two days to pace the Bobcats and finish tied for sixth overall out of 23 individuals.
First-year Amisha Kalra (Short Hills, N.J.) finished eighth overall with a 93 on Sunday and a 96 on Monday. Fellow first-year Sylvia Battye (Auburn, Ala.) shot a 92 on Sunday, tying Seipp for the best round of the two-day tournament for the Bobcats.
Bates finished with a team score of 764 and Husson finished with a 766. Johnson & Wales (790) took third and Suffolk (792) came in fourth.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes member colleges and universities in New England and New York and is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament.
This year marked the first time Bates has participated in the Women's NEIGA Championship.
The Bates women's golf season continues in April when first-year Chloe Baylor (Lincoln, Neb.) competes for a conference title in the NESCAC Women's Golf Championship.
