WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.--In a showdown of two nationally ranked field hockey teams, No. 8 Williams College edged No. 13 Bates College 1-0 in a NESCAC game played at the Ephs' Williamson Field this afternoon.

It was the 11th straight victory for Williams (11-1 overall, 7-1 NESCAC). The Bobcats are now 8-4 this season and 4-4 in the NESCAC.

What proved to be the lone goal of the game came just 5:16 into the first quarter. Williams' Emma Ticknor scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Emily Batchelor.

Just before halftime, senior Ally Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) fired a shot on goal for the Bobcats, but Williams goalie Abby Lloyd stepped up to make the save. Early in the fourth quarter, Bates had another scoring chance, earning a penalty corner. Sophomore Ashton Bayle (Wayne, Pa.) inserted the ball, but the Bobcats were unable to get a shot off.  The Bates defense held strong to keep it a one goal game, denying seven Ephs penalty corners in the second half.

Williams finished with a 12-2 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in corners. Sophomore Ellie Bauer (Denver, Colo.) played the opening 30 minutes in goal for Bates. First-year Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) came in for the second half. She stopped all four shots that she faced. Lloyd played all 60 minutes in goal for Williams and made one save to earn the shutout.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 24, when they take on Babson in a non-conference game at the University of New England at 6:30 p.m.
