On-campus Venues

Basketball & Volleyball

Alumni Gymnasium (130 Central Avenue) is the building behind the first parking lot on your left off of Central Ave.

Field Hockey

Campus Ave. Field (86 Campus Avenue) is on your right off of Campus Ave. Parking is available in the John Bertram Hall lot or on Central Ave.


Leahey Field (137 Central Avenue) is on the right. Parking is available in the John Bertram Hall lot or on Central Ave.

Football & Lacrosse

Garcelon Field (144 Central Avenue) is on the left, past Alumni Gym. Parking is available on Central Ave. or in the Russell St. Lot (see below).


Wallach Tennis Center (147 Central Avenue) is past Garcelon Field on the right. Parking is available on Central Ave. or in the Russell St. Lot (see below). The rest of the on-campus facilities can be accessed from Russell St. To reach Russell St., continue on Central Ave. to the next light. Turn right, and take your first right into the facility parking lot.

Soccer, Softball and Outdoor Track & Field

Russell St. Soccer Field, Softball Field and Outdoor Track (151 Russell Street) are all on your left from the parking lot.

Club Ice Hockey

Underhill Arena is the smaller building on your right once you turn into the parking lot.

Swimming, Tennis (Indoor Courts) and Indoor Track & Field

Tarbell Pool, the indoor tennis courts and Slovenski Indoor Track are all in Merrill Gymnasium, the larger building straight ahead as you enter the parking lot and on your left as you walk towards the entrances.

Off-campus Venues

Rowing (Traquina Boathouse - Meadow Hill Rd., Greene, Maine)

Turn left onto Russell St. Go through one light (College St.). At the next light, take a right onto Rt. 202 N (Main St.). Travel 5.3 miles on 202. Pass two cemeteries and a white church on the left. Take a left onto West Main St. Take an immediate left onto Meadow Hill Rd. Follow Meadow Hill for approx. 2 miles. The Traquina boathouse is just past a big farm on the left. It is marked by a post #764. The boathouse is down in a field by itself. Authorization for use is required; for more information, please contact the Bates College Athletics Department at 207-786-6341.

Squash (56 Alfred Plourde Parkway, Lewiston)

Go to Maine Turnpike Exit 80 (Lewiston exit), onto Alfred Plourde Parkway. Without turning onto the turnpike either northbound or southbound, instead proceed straight past them -- there will be a tall rock cliff on your left --- and continue 1/2 mile up the gradual incline and look for "Squash Facility" building on the left. The Bates Squash Facility is located approximately 3 miles from campus. The address of the Bates Squash Center is 56 Alfred Plourde Parkway.

Alpine Skiing (Sunday River - Newry, Maine)

Take a left onto Russell St. Cross the river into Auburn. Follow Rt. 11/121 to Mechanic Falls. Follow 121 to Norway/So. Paris until you can pick up Rt. 26 N to Bethel. then follow signs for Rt. 2 E and Sunday River.

Nordic Skiing (Black Mountain - Rumford, Maine)

Take a left onto Russell Street. Cross the river into Auburn. Take a right onto Rt. 4 N. Take Rt. 4 to Rt. 108 W/N (in Livermore Falls) to Rumford. Go over the bridge and take a right after the Exxon Station and then bear left on to Spruce Street which will turn into Swain Road, follow to Isthmus Road and take a right. Travel approx. 1.5 miles. Black Mountain is on your left.

Cross Country (Pineland Farms - New Gloucester, Maine)

From the Maine Turnpike (From the web site):
  • Take the Maine Turnpike to Exit 63 (formerly Exit 11) in Gray, Maine.
  • Bear to the right after the toll booth, toward the center of Gray Village.
  • Stay in the right lane. At the first intersection, go straight through the light onto Route 115.
  • Continue on Route 115 (East) for 1.6 miles, then turn left onto Depot Road.
  • Continue on Depot Road for 2.8 miles to a stop sign.
  • Turn left at the stop sign onto Route 231/Intervale Road, then immediately right past the Pineland Gardens
  • Entrance to the course will be on the left about .2 miles past gardens. Buses will be directed where to park.
